The business of sport and gaming are now inextricably linked, following the 2018 Supreme Court’s decision in Murphy v. NCAA. In less than one year since the SCOTUS ruling, every major professional sports league has engaged a casino partner, teams are expanding their relationships with gaming operators, and the potential for sports betting to revolutionize fan engagement both within and outside the venue has never been greater. During this session, two industry titans will discuss how they are looking at leveraging their assets across sports teams, venues and gaming companies, to create new value for their organizations and how they see these new opportunities impacting customer engagement.

When the Supreme Court ruled last May to strike down PASPA as unconstitutional, it was a long-awaited moment for many proponents of sports betting expansion; but perhaps none more so than the plaintiffs in the case – the State of New Jersey. Governor Chris Christie started the challenge to PASPA in 2011 and though there were defeats at every level of the judicial process, kept pushing the state forward with the lawsuit. During this session, Governor Christie will provide attendees with a real story of the state’s challenge to PASPA, why he committed so many resources to it and how he thinks the state is doing nearly a year after PASPA was repealed.

Understanding the Sports Betting Consumer

Previous research showed that the customers participating in sports betting in states like New Jersey are different from traditional casino gaming consumers. They skew younger, more highly educated and more affluent than many of the traditional casino consumers. AGA has recently conducted a large, comprehensive study on the U.S. sports betting consumer. Mike Dabadie of Heart+Mind Strategies, who conducted the survey on behalf of AGA, will reveal key insights gleaned from the research and important takeaways among this critical consumer group.

Former Head of the Criminal Division at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and current Vice Chair of Covington & Burling LLP, Lanny Breuer, will provide insight into the recent DOJ Wire Act opinion and any potential impact on legal sports betting. This session will address some of the unknowns arising from the Office of Legal Counsel memo with an emphasis on how DOJ goes about enforcement and what companies can expect following the reversal of the 2011 guidance.

The expansion of sports betting at the state level has been accelerating at a breakneck pace since PASPA was repealed last May. In the first quarter of 2019 alone, more than 20 states have introduced sports betting legislation, with several more implementing legal sports wagering in a variety of constructs. Issues like regulation, responsible gaming, data rights and royalties are all being considered. This panel discussion will provide a look across the country at how states and sovereign tribal nations are talking about sports betting, what they’ve learned, what’s been successful for them and how they believe new states should consider legislation.

The changes felt with the repeal of PASPA were especially evident in the professional sports community. With the exponential expansion of sports betting across the country, leagues had to get up to speed quickly on what they needed to know, the risks involved and how they wanted to approach sports betting. Over the past year, several leagues and teams have worked to build partnerships with casinos and sports betting operations. The Commissioner of the NHL and Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International leaders will talk in this session about how their partnership came about and how new collaboration and partnerships will impact sports and gaming.
